The Stephen Hawking Building at Gonville & Caius College, Cambridge, was entirely funded by donations from alumni and friends of the College, prompted by an appeal by the Caius Development Office. It was opened by Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, on 17 April 2007, in the presence of many generous benefactors.

In another fundraising appeal in the Once a Caian… alumni magazine, Mick Le Moignan is photographed with Professor Stephen Hawking, filming Stephen’s address for the opening of the building named for him. Stephen was unable to attend the official opening as he was in the USA undergoing weightlessness training for space travel.
